This thread is a combination of 2 losely linked theories i had recently.
First is this...
"There are 2 types of people in the world. The first type see's reality for what it is and modifies themselves and thier behaviors to accomodate. The second type of person tries to change reality to fit themselves...who do you think does better in life?"
The obvious answer here is the first type. Reality is just that...regardless of what you think of it, how you feel about it, or how much you dont like it.
There is a saying that you can call a chair a rose, you can scream at the chair, you can even hit it...but its still a fucking chair.
Take this for example...gas IS $4+ a gallon, thats reality. No matter who you externalize the blame to, or no matter how much you bitch and complain, or regardless of writting letters and telling others what they should do....gas is still going to be the same price.
Now lets say that instead of trying to change (frivolously) to change the reality you instead change your lifestyle and behavior...car pool, buy a hybrid and ditch the SUV, take public transit, ride a bike or walk short distances, etc. Isnt that a better way of handling things?
The problem is, outside of a community like this, the majority of people fit into the second category. They will try and call things other then what they are, they will ignore things or try and put it in a better light. They will continue to fail or barely get by because they refuse to change for the better.
There are over 100 definitions of the term "intelligence". What binds them all is one concept or term...adaptation, adaptability....being able to change.
Most people remind me of that episode of The Simpsons were lisa hooks a cupcake upto an electrical charge and bart keeps electricuting himself every few seconds trying to grab it. Zap! "Ow!".....Zap! "Ow!"....Zap! "Ow!"

The second theory is the 3 steps theory (its actually 4 steps but the 4th is conditional).
This is a theory that is soo simple it hurts my brain. However it can be applied to ANY goal or problem one faces.
here it is;
1) Identify the goal or problem:
Seems simple enough but most people fail to do this step. At least they dont do it correctly. Take the example earlier of gas being 4 dollars a gallon. Is OPEC the issue or your habits and lifestyle?
2) Create a plan to get your goal or solve your problem:
Again, pretty straight foreward, but if you dont do step one right this step is bound to fail. Once you've done step one, you must come up with a plan to acheive what you want. This can be simple or time consuming...depends on what your trying to accomplish.
3) Execute the plan!:
Obvious, but most people fail to do this (im no exception). We did step 1 and 2, but when it came time to act we chicken out or get lazy or resort to old ways. This is where you need to have self control and do what you planned to do.
And guess what you do if you follow these steps and DONT get what you want or solve your problem???
You guess it this is the hidden step 4!
GO BACK TO STEP 1 AND START OVER!!!!
Simple. Some of my greatest problems in life have been solved throught this process...some of my greatest goals acheived by using it.
Hope you enjoy reading this as much as i did writting it. As Tau Teh King by Lao Tzu begins....(i paraphrase, as i cannot find the book and there are many translations)....
"One can never explain a thing, for that thing in its name is just a representation of that which is.
Being just an abstraction, the thing that IS cannot be expressed, only felt."
So i leave you with that, knowing that what ive told you here cannot do that which IS justice...we all need to feel it for ourselves.
